Council of International Investigators Membership Requirements
If you are a private investigator or private detective and would like to join the Council of International Investigators, please decide which membership class you would like to apply for before beginning your application:
Certified Member:
- Is available to the owner of a firm, partnership or corporation who has been regularly employed as an investigator, security professional, law enforcement agent or similar profession for not less than five (5) years
- Owner is now the principal, managing partner, chief executive or sole practitioner of a business for a period of not less than three (3) years.
- There is a limit of two (2) Certified members per any one (1) firm.
Qualified Member:
- Criteria as for a Certified member except applicant has not operated their own business for three (3) years.
- Applicant must have been employed in the field for not less than five (5) years.
- Applicant has all rights of personal appearance and discussion at meetings, but no right to vote or hold office.
- There is a limit of two (2) Qualified members per any one (1) firm.
- Applicant can apply for Certified membership as soon as they satisfy the requirements.
Associate Member:
- Is restricted to a spouse or an employee of a Certified member or a spouse of a deceased Certified member.
- Has all rights of personal appearance and discussion at meetings, but no right to vote or hold office.
- Membership will be reviewed annually by the Board of Directors at the Mid-year Meeting.
- A Certified member must sponsor applicants for Associate membership.
Affiliate Member:
- Is available to any person empowered by position within a corporation or company to initiate, supervise, or contract for an investigation or who comes from an industry that furnishes materials or services to the professional investigation industry.
- A Certified member must recommend them.
- Affiliate members cannot vote or hold office.
- They maintain membership as long as a Certified member sponsors them.
- If they leave their field of employment or the Certified member loses membership, Affiliate membership ceases.
Requirements - all membership classes:
- All members of the Council of International Investigators must:

- be of high moral character and have no criminal charges undisclosed.
- be of good financial standing.

- Membership will not be granted to an individual whose principal occupation is one of the following:

- Debt collection
- Auto repossession
- Service of process
- Martial investigation
- Transfer of currency
